Core Rules Information

The Child Care Services Division at Bright from the Start monitors child care programs using a system that focuses on certain “core rules” within 15 “core rule categories”.

The system is based on research which indicates that these “core rules” are critical areas to consider when determining compliance and the impact on the health and safety of children.

Examples of core rule categories are transportation, swimming, medication, ratios, etc.

Certain rules within these categories are the “core rules”.

Each time any core rule within the 15 core rules categories is cited, the risk level of the citation is also assessed. Risk level is assigned at low, medium, high and extreme levels.

The number of core rule categories cited and the assigned risk level determines the child care program’s compliance level.
